Hello from Wes,This is the first time I’ve written a newsletter to you all so I hope you will find it interesting… I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if you have any questions that I can incorporate into the next newsletter that would be great! Port Isaac has been a home to fishermen since the 14th century. It is still a working port where daily catches of crab and lobster are landed on the Platt in the heart of this beautiful village. The small harbour was also a centre for importing goods and exporting fish, Delabole slate and corn. The name Port Isaac comes from the Cornish Port Izzick meaning corn port. My little shop ‘May Contain Nuts’ sat in the middle of Fore Street in Port Isaac 2012 – 2022. During that time we had lots of visits from the Doc Martin crew and cast. Over the years many became more like friends and we’d look forward to them returning every other year.
The original idea for Doc Martin came from the film ‘Saving Grace’ which was set in Port Isaac and features a doctor played by Martin Clunes. Originally my shop was a small supermarket and was geatured in the film. There’s a really funny scene featuring Brenda Belthyn and Phiyllda Law behind the counter after having drunk some ‘herbal’ tea, it’s definitely worth a watch. In 2004 the first series of Doc Martin was aired and filming pretty much continued every other year finishing with series 10 in 2022. There was always a buzz in the village when filming was going on, and although not everyone was a fan I personally really enjoyed it. We always had lots of visitors from abroad especially America and Australia. Some would spend their whole holiday just following everyday, just sitting for hours watching the same scene being filmed time and time again until it was just right, whilst others would literally come for the day travelling from London by train to Bodmin and then taxi to Port Isaac and then return to the London just a few hours later! |
If you get the chance when visiting this quaint littel Cornish village, take the ‘Walk and Talk’ tour. Not just for the Doc Martin fans, the tour takes its visitors to various points of interest in the village as well as going in depth with some of its more historical importance over the last 700 odd years. |
Don’t forget to treat yourself to a pasty, cream tea (jam first, we’re not from Devon!), Cornish Ice cream, a freshly caught crab sandwich and/or a Doom Bar while soaking in the goodness of the port that is Port Isaac. |
